Feline Herpesvirus (FHV)
What is FHV? Feline Herpesvirus (FHV) is an infectious respiratory disease found only in cats. Symptoms include sneezing, upper respiratory infection, and problems with the surface of the eyes. Once contracted, the virus stays in the body forever, but the symptoms may come and go. Herpes–related eye problems tend to worsen during periods of stress (for example, after a move, injury, or introduction of a new family member).
How Did My Cat Get FHV? Cats contract Herpes from other cats in the same way humans "catch" the common cold: through sneezing, sharing dishes, etc. Feline Herpesvirus is NOT contagious to humans or dogs.
What Are the Symptoms of FHV? Eye problems associated with Feline Herpesvirus usually involve the cornea and conjunctiva. Typical symptoms include redness, cloudiness, and/or squinting. Persistent irritation of the cornea may lead to corneal ulceration.
How Can I Lower My Cat’s Stress Level? Since territorial stress of multiple cat households or neighborhoods as well as changes in the environment are commonly associated with the flare up of latent herpesvirus infections, reducing stress is very important. This can sometimes be achieved by using Feliway or Comfort Zone during stressful events or in multi-cat households.
What is Feliway/Comfort Zone? Feliway or Comfort Zone are facial pheromone products that induce a more friendly and harmonious atmosphere for cats and can dramatically reduce stress. They are available in spray bottle form or in plug-in diffusers for longer lasting effect. Feliway is available through veterinarians and Comfort Zone from retailers such as PetSmart, PetCo, and Walmart.
More information on Feliway and Comfort Zone can be obtained from www.feliway.com or by calling 888-241-9545
